WE 365: Youth Voices on Breast Cancer Prevention and Awareness

Breast Cancer Awareness and Prevention is the topic for Youth Voices on June 24th.  To share her perspective, we’ll hear from Julia Werner, a senior at DuPont Manual High School in Louisville.

My name is Julia Werner and I’m a senior at DuPont manual high school. One issue I’m very passionate about is breast cancer prevention and awareness. I was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico; the place where I first got involved with the issue. Since middle school my mom and I have been attending the breast cancer fundraiser in New Mexico with several of her friends and their daughters.

This year I decided I wanted to contribute more than attendance of the annual fundraiser, so my mom and I reached out to the organization we have been fundraising for called B4BC (Boarding for Breast Cancer). One really cool thing that happens at the fundraisers are information booths that teach self breast exams and hand out information on breast cancer. I decided to fundraise I wanted to host an information booth in Louisville, so per the recommendation of a friend I reached out to a local farmers market and set up a booth there!  To fundraise I made over 100 sugar scrubs to offer in exchange for donations. I hosted my booth almost every Saturday and was happy to have several of my friends interested in the cause and willing to help me out. The booth lasted from about September to December and I hope to continue it in the future. We raised over five hundred dollars and educated over two hundred people on how to do self breast examinations. This is one of my favorite service projects that I’ve done so far. It’s great to know all the money is going to a wonderful cause to help women struggling with breast cancer.
